Viper

When Pray is gone, I leave Eileen to figure out what to do with the dead body and find out if he has any family that we need to contact and pay off. I also leave her to make sure that Pray is long gone and that he hasn’t planted any surprises for me to find at a later time. Normally, I would be right there with her making sure all of that was taken care of. But instead, I head straight for the twin’s room, only to find that Dele and the twins aren’t there. I allow myself a brief moment of panic before remembering that if something were wrong, Eileen would have let me know.

I head to Dele’s room, and when she’s not there, I check my own room. I find her leaning back on the headboard of my bed with the twins sleeping next to her on one side and her guns in arm’s reach just on the other side while she’s watching some silly cartoon. Her hand is on one of them as I open the door. But upon realizing it’s only me, she pulls her hand away.

“Is he gone?”

“I think so,” I reply. Then, “You switched rooms.”

“They got a little restless. Thought it was best to move to a room without a balcony from where their voices could carry down to Pray just in case,” she explains. “So. What did Pray want?”

I start to open my mouth and explain it to her. But then I look down at the twins sleeping next to her, and I can’t bring myself to. Not immediately.

“Adrian,” she says.

I turn my attention back to Dele. She must be actually worried if she’s not using my codename as she usually tends to. Her expression proves me right. She’s frowning, her eyebrows are furrowed, and her eyes, always so expression when she doesn’t have her guard up, shine with concern.

“Adrian, what—”

“You can leave the twins here. Go… I don’t know. Do whatever,” I say as I begin to take off my blazer.

“Viper—”

“Not now, Dele,” I snap.

Dele’s concern gives way to irritation at me, but she doesn’t argue as she grabs her guns and leaves the room. Just after I’ve tossed off my shirt and shoes and am about to pass out in the bed next to the twins, she comes back. This time with a bottle of vodka, two glasses, and a bucket of ice. She wordlessly walks by me and goes out to sit out on the extensive balcony attached to my room.

“What are you doing, Bell?” I ask, trying to sound harsh but lacking the energy after dealing with Pray. Dealing with Pray is always an… exercise, but he doesn’t usually leave me so drained.

“Your balcony has the best view of the sunset,” she replies.

She’s already poured herself some of the vodka, still preferring it neat like she always has, and is leaning back in the outdoor lounge daybed/couch. If I were in a better mood, I might force her out.
